3 Bryce Palm Tree Objects

(MAC/PC Bryce 5.0.1 or greater only!)

Download Coconut Palm 1 (36K Zip / 116K .BTO)

Download Coconut Palm 2 (36K Zip/ 116K .BTO)

Download Date Palm 1 (32K Zip/ 72K .BTO)

Download Leaf Textures (29K Zip/ 104K .MAT)

Download Applescript to correct Mac OS9 .BTO exports (4K Zip/8K Script). This is not needed to load the above trees!

IMPORTANT LOADING INSTRUCTIONS!

How to use these files:

1) Download the tree(s) and the leaf texture file and unzip them.

2) Put the BTO files in the Bryce5>Presets>Trees folder.

2) Load Bryce 5.0.1 (only!).

2) While holding down the Alt (PC) / Option (Mac) key, click the Create Tree Icon. Keep holding the key down until the file selector appears and select the .BTO file

3) Due to a bug in the Bryce 5.0.1 .BTO export, incorrect textures get saved with the file. To apply the textures shown above:
Click the Material Preset gadget
Click the Leaves Category
Select the Import button and navigate to the palmleaves.mat file and click OK. This should load 3 new leaf materials at the end of the current list.
Make sure the tree is selected, and hit the little "E" next to the tree. Under Foliage, select the Material Edit button and apply the appropriate leaf material.
A few notes on using these trees.

All the leaf materials use alpha transparency, which will greatly slow the render (but I think they look better). This can be removed by setting the Transparency amount to zero and moving the blue ball out of the first channel in the Materials Editor.

These Palm Trees always look better when rendered with the Super or Premium modes set for at least 16RPP (Rays per Pixel). Trees above rendered at 64RPP.

The trees should be also be "sunk" fairly fair into the ground, to avoid the roots and the low bulge in some trunks (as seen in the top image)

File type error fix for MAC OS9.x BTO export
Bryce 5.0.1 running under OS9 often exports .BTOs as a TEMP file (file icon is a trash can). These files can cause problems when imported and can also be erased by Bryce when it closes. If you have this problem, download the above Applescript and drag the .BTO file(s) onto the script before you quit Bryce to correct this .
